5.4.4. Why do meteorites become red-hot in the Earth's atmosphere?
Solution
As they move through the Earth's atmosphere, meteorites and other bodies entering the atmosphere heat up greatly due to friction with the air. Since the internal energy increases as a result, this leads to heating of the meteorites and the layer of air in contact with them. Small meteoritic bodies evaporate before reaching the Earth.
