Statement

8.4.11∗. Initial capacitance and charge of the capacitor and . The capacitance of the capacitor begins to change over time so that the current in the circuit remains constant and equal to . Calculate the power consumed from the generator and compare it with the power absorbed by the capacitor. Why are the values compared different?

For problem $8.4.11$

Solution

During a short time , the additional charge of is delivered to the capacitor. Since the energy stored in the capacitor is , where is the charge on the capacitor and is the constant voltage drop across the capacitor (and the generator), the change in the energy stored in the capacitor is . Thus, the power absorbed by the capacitor is , which is half of the power consumed from the generator. The difference arises from the fact that we need to do negative work to bring the plates of the capacitor (which have a tendency to attract each other) closer to increase its capacitance while keeping the voltage drop across it constant.
