Why is the transformer core assembled from separate plates

Solution

The transformer core is assembled from separate plates insulated from each other to reduce eddy currents.

If it were a single solid piece, the alternating magnetic flux would induce huge swirling currents that would heat up the core and trow to trash the efficiency. The laminations cut off the path of those currents, greatly weaken them, and minimize the losses.

Answer

$\boxed{to reduce eddy currents}$
